GeoWhere Search Can be Used for Good and Evil

GeoWhere is a program containing multiple useful tools that can make surfing the ‘Net much easier.  It consists of a desktop search engine that sends queries to multiple search engines and then returns the results to you.  This saves you the trouble of having to go to each of these sites individually and retype your keywords.  GeoWhere Search can be used for good and evil – that was the good.

The not-so-good about GeoWhere is that since it is a free download, it is an easy target for developers that want to include malicious adware with this software.  When this happens, GeoWhere is suddenly not so useful, as it begins to create frequent pop-ups and unwanted advertisements.

Adware can also be silently downloaded from a website and installed it onto your computer without your knowledge.  Since many adware programs do not leave any identifying marks in your system, they are difficult to trace, even though you know they are there.  This type of adware does not show up in the Start Menu, there are no icons on the desktop or the system tray, and they don’t even show up in the task list.  Adware seldom provides uninstall instructions – and when it does, the results are not favorable because it does not completely remove the troublesome software.

Browser Hijackers can also download adware and reconfigure your browser settings, redirecting your searches to unwanted websites or even changing your default home page.  Re-directs to pay-per-view pornographic websites seems to be a big hit with hijackers.

There is only one sure way to remove adware from your computer and that is with a good anti-spyware program.   There are several free programs available, but they are just not as powerful at removing that stubborn software that refuses to die.   One of the wisest decisions you can make is to invest in a spyware removal program with a good reputation and a solid track record for removing spyware, adware, malware, and other potentially hazardous software on your computer.
