Today I’m going to share a story about my computer getting infected with adware. If you are anything like me you have heard the term adware, but never really knew what it meant. So, before we begin let me tell you the definition I was able to piece together. Adware is a program that was created with the intent of flooding you with pop-ups and other advertisements. Adware usually comes bundled with freeware programs such as games, weather monitors, screen savers, tool bars, etc. Adware can hog your computer’s resources, slowing your computer and Internet speeds down. Some adware tracks your activities and information.

The adware I found myself infected with is called enConfidence. I downloaded and installed a program called “My Daily Horoscope,” and it installed a tool bar called Begin2Seach as well. I was flooded with pop-ups — both floating images on top of other windows as well as pop ups in the program itself. My computer’s speed slowed down to a crawl. I was alarmed at the change in my system and annoyed with all the advertisements.

I knew I had to get this adware off my computer, but when I tried add/remove programs it acted like it uninstalled, but on reboot enConfidence was back. I started searching the Internet looking for answers.

I found out I needed to get an anti-spyware program to remove enConfidence, but most anti-spyware programs only remove 80-90% of the infection, leaving you to be infected again at reboot. I found that unacceptable and kept looking.
