Will Your Spyware Protection Software Protect You?

How do I get spyware on my computer?

Spyware has become one of the biggest problems in the computer industry. It affects everyone from those who are plugged into a large network of computers to the everyday PC user. Spyware is indiscriminant in its goal to cause trouble for computer users. And without spyware protection, everyone is at risk.

Spyware comes from several key places. Popups are one of those places. You should always avoid clicking the “okay” or “yes” button on popups from unknown sources. If you are going to click on of those buttons, carefully scrutinize the popup. Sometimes a message appears to be from Microsoft or a virus scanner, when it is really spyware in disguise.

Freeware is another common source of spyware. Freeware constitutes any type of free download, whether it is music, movies, or just a new toolbar for your web browser. It is always wise to be suspicious of file sharing programs. If you don’t know from whom you are downloading and you don’t have spyware protection, beware.

What does spyware do?

Spyware has a number of detrimental effects on you and your computer. The most severe of which is identity theft. Spyware has the ability to sneak around on your computer and log every key you press. So if you check an online bank statement, or pay an electric bill, or type in your social security number, the spyware records it. It then sends it back to the perpetrating hacker to do with it as he or she pleases.

Other symptoms of a spyware invasion include a slower system, increased popups, and unexplained changes in your homepage or other settings. The spyware can literally hijack your computer, stealing your personal information and making a mess of your computer. It is for these reasons that spyware protection is so important.

How do I get spyware protection?

There are several steps you can take to ensure spyware protection for your computer. The first is to install a popup blocker. This will limit the number of popups that include spyware. If you do get a popup, close it and move on, don’t click “okay,” even if the popup says something like “spyware has been detected on your computer, click okay for a free scan.” This is often a trick and is actually spyware.

Also, be careful to read the fine print when downloading anything. Free downloads are sometimes free because they include adware. The creator has to make their money somehow, so instead of charging you they get money from the advertisers who imbed their marketing materials in the program.

Last, but certainly not least, you should get anti spyware software. There are many different kinds on the market so do your homework before purchasing one. Here are some things to keep in mind when looking for spyware protection:

* Does the program both remove and prevent spyware. It’s great to clean out the current spyware, but it defeats the purpose if you don’t prevent it in the future.

* Does the company offer updates to combat new spyware as it is introduced into cyberspace?

* Is the program easy to use? Quality spyware protection won’t require a lot of upkeep.

* Does the company offer helpful customer service? You want to be able to email a real live person if you find yourself having problems.

By avoiding popups, being careful what you download, and installing spyware protection, you are not only making sure your computer is secured, but also every piece of personal information that is transmitted through it.
